The Heart Foundation is a charity dedicated to fighting the single biggest killer of Australians – heart disease. For over 50 years, we’ve led the battle to save lives and improve the heart health of all Australians. Our sights are set on a world where people don’t suffer or die prematurely because of heart disease.
The Heart Foundation is a national leader in research into the causes, treatment and prevention of heart disease and related disorders.
We believe evidence-based prevention and treatment is the most effective way to help all Australians have better heart health, and we play an important role in generating and translating that research evidence.
Our research funding portfolio is designed to support and develop excellent heart research in Australia. Each year we fund the best and brightest researchers, exploring a wide range of issues relating to heart disease in the areas of biomedical, clinical, public health and health services. We provide opportunities for individual researchers and for projects.
A key part of managing this portfolio is identifying gaps in the evidence and determining how we can best support researchers and build the research capacity to address these gaps. We also regularly review our funding scheme to ensure it caters to the needs and opportunities of Australian heart research.
All research funding applications undergo an independent and rigorous peer review process.
External committees of experienced researchers and academics from around the country review applications and make funding recommendations. Reviews and rankings are based on scientific merit, track record, relevance and feasibility.
The process is overseen by a Research Committee, consisting of some of the most highly respected researchers and health professionals in Australia, to ensure funding decisions are made in a fair and transparent way.
The reviewers generously donate their time and expertise, helping to ensure that we fund the best possible research projects and use our donors’ money in the most effective way. We greatly appreciate their invaluable contributions to the Heart Foundation.
